Entering a plea
Usually your first court appearance will likely be an arraignment where you will enter a plea of either guilty, not guilty or nolo contendere. If you plead not guilty, you can always change your plea later to guilty or nolo contendere. Although you are not required to have an attorney at the arraignment, it is probably better to have one present. You will want to discuss your situation with an attorney before you plea bargain with the prosecution. DUI defendants in cases with injuries or property damage will usually plead nolo contendere rather than guilty. A nolo contendere plea is not an admission of guilt and may not be admitted as evidence in a later civil case in most jurisdictions.
